The NSW Country Junior Rugby Union Championships for Under 14s and
15s was held at Newcastle at the weekend. Mudgee had 6 representatives
in the Central West teams. In the 14s were Andy Leathem, Keeghan Munn,
Darcy Croake and Bligh Angel, and in the 15s were Matthew Sandell and
Nathan Orr. Unfortunately Nathan is recovering from a broken collarbone
but was there supporting the team and will hopefully be fit for the
State Championships. The Under 15s came second in their pool after a tight fought win over Central Coast in their first game and a loss to a very hot Illawarra team in their second game. In the semi-finals they faced off against a very in-form Far North Coast team. While Central West were able to contain them in the forwards, their backs were just too good with Far North Coast running out victors and becoming the favourites for the carnival. Central West had to play Illawarra again in the playoff for 3rd. A disconcerting thought when they had been beaten 54-0 by them the previous day. The Central West boys obviously saved their best for last, losing 17-12 in a wonderful game of rugby. It was a credit to the boys and their character! Central West had 2 players named in the Country Squad with one of them being Wombat Matthew Sandell. Matthew was also awarded the trophy for the Best Forward in the 15s Carnival. |
| Under 14's |
The Under 14s played exceptionally well in the pool games, losing
only one game 24-26 to Newcastle who were the eventual champions.
Unfortunately they couldn’t quite convert field position to points in
the semi-final against Central Coast and lost 5-3. In the playoff for 3rd,
they were convincing winners against Illawarra. All Wombat players made
important contributions to the success of the team and on the sideline
there was talk about what a strong tight five Central West had despite
giving away many kilos. Central West had 7 players named in the Country
Squad but unluckily none of them were Wombats though they must have been
extremely close.
Congratulations to the boys! They were a credit to Central West and Mudgee Wombats! |

Mudgee U15s Reds The boys travelled by bus to Orange on Saturday to take on the Orange Emus 1st U15s. To work in with the Emus who had a big day of home games we started early at their request and got to Orange at 9:30am. The boys took the field at10:00. By10:06 it was clear that Mudgee were not going to win this match. The Mudgee boys played some very structured and gutsy rugby through out the match, only to have their ball continually spoilt by the constant offside play by the Emus. Mudgee forwards were dominating all over the park, with the backs making decisive inroads through the Emus' defence, again to be brought back for something that only the whistle blower could see. To their credit the Mudgee boys didn't give up and were rewarded with three good tries with one conversion, but in the end couldn't continue the pace against a team of 16 with the end score Mudgee 17, Emus 19. It is testament to the boy's in the way they carried themselves, they were winners on the day. Some of us were not so controlled. Best Forward: Matt Sandell Best Back: Stewart Fredricks, 3 Points Matt Sandell, 2 points Tom Stanford, 1point Andy Leathem. Well done Boys. |
